Relationship Over Ritual

Relationship is more important than ritual
Relationship is more important than ritual

Many people get disillusioned when their magic doesn't work. They may even think they've been hexed, because their ritual seems to not have worked, or worse, maybe the opposite of their intention manifested.

In response, practitioners (people that do magic or have it done for them) try to strengthen the original working by piling on more rituals, switching tactics, or turning to another spirit for help. While understandable, this impulse is misguided.

This is a major problem in spiritual circles. People want something, so they perform witchcraft. Rarely do you see anyone on Instagram or TikTok talking about when not to do magic. Rarely do you hear someone saying, “Don’t go to that bruja or brujo”.

Well, consider me that someone. Don't go to that bruja or brujo. Don't get that reading.

Now, I know it might seem foolish for me to say that—after all, I read Tarot cards and do magic for my clients—but hear me out.  I'm in this to serve the public good—not to chase profits.

The more magic you perform, the more "energetic noise" you are making (more on this later). Think of it like an old television blasting white noise at full volume- chaotic, overwhelming and hard to tune out. Unpleasant, right? You’re getting the idea.

Relationship is more important than ritual.

Imagine trying to grow close to someone but constantly walking away just as they begin to speak. It would be impossible to build a true relationship that way—yet that’s exactly how many of us engage with our guides. That is not a way to create a long-term relationship, yet we do it with our guides all the time.

It's important for people, especially spiritual practitioners, to get to know their own guides. Getting to know your guides means truly listening. They do respond ......but if we don't create the space to hear them, we miss the wisdom they offer. You have to allow them to respond to you; and they do, whether through synchronicities, dreams, or prolonged silence - they'll respond. Learning to listen will ensure stability and depth that you can't get if you are getting readings from other practitioners.

Here’s another risk: not every practitioner is ethical. They may be manipulating you by telling you that you need a working when you don't, or they may be working on you themselves to keep you coming back. Learn to connect with your guides.

Every spiritual interaction - whether you are performing a ritual or receiving one -  leaves behind energetic residue.

Remember what I said about "energetic noise"? Every time you put an offering on the altar or do a work, you are affecting energy currents much like sound waves. All that noise can drown out the messages your guides are trying to send, especially when they're signaling that your working is unnecessary or even counterproductive.

Connecting to your guides is what makes you an effective spiritual practitioner.

If you have a strong relationship with your guides, they will tell you when magic is necessary. You may be surprised to find that they rarely tell you to perform magic. They are more likely to tell you to pray.

A strong relationship with your guides will also lead to a divination tool or technique that you must use before performing any magic. This divination tool must be something developed between yourself and your guides, and it should not be shared with anyone. In cases when life becomes hectic and you feel like there's a need to change some of the energy around you, it's important to consult with your head guide to see if you should.

Your guide knows more than you about the spiritual terrain you are moving through. They shape intuition, but intuition can be misguided if you haven't cultivated that relationship.  So before you do any magic, pause. Ask your guide, and only proceed with magic if your personal divination practice—one you’ve developed together—says it’s appropriate. This tool should be private, sacred, and used only by you. The most powerful magic comes from clarity, not chaos. If you don't know how to communicate with your guide, you may find yourself doing something you're not supposed to. Many practitioners skip the divination step to their detriment.
