What is Tarot good for?

Many people have misconceptions regarding what Tarot readings are. Images abound with gypsy women sitting across from distraught customers expecting to hear good news about their future. Is this not what Tarot readings are? Not necessarily.

A medium that uses a Tarot deck to read is "reading" an individual's present energies; they are only seeing what is manifesting now and what the consequences of those energies may be in the near future. The Tarot does not necessarily predict anything in itself because free will is a reality of existence. What about the question of Fate?

I subscribe to a compatibilist view of reality. What does that mean? Think about this carefully. We all have behavioral tendencies that we have developed as a result of things beyond our control. We did not choose where we were born, what our DNA says, or who our parents were even though these are by far some of the most definitive things about us as human beings. Does this mean we have no control over anything? No, of course not. I can choose to mitigate the negative effects of genetic predispositions by eating right and going to counseling. I could improve my economic situation by being frugal and working extra hours, if necessary. Okay, does it seem like I'm getting off track? How does this relate to Tarot readings?

This relates to Tarot readings because Tarot readings enlighten believers to their actual spiritual circumstances. Think about the Tarot as a mirror. I shuffle the cards and address my guiding spirit, he selects the cards relevant to the believer's situation, and we discuss what's happening in that person's life. At this point, my guide may issue warnings concerning what is going to happen if the person continues to live the way they have been. Whatever the warning says, it is based on the concept of cause and effect; most mediums I know would call this "karma", but others may call this their "fate".
